Gravel Driveway Calculator: Tons Needed for Any Depth, Width & Length

Gravel driveways are the cheapest hard surface you can install — but order too little and you have ruts and mud. Order too much and you're giving gravel away to neighbors. Here's how to calculate it right, including compaction and the real depth you need.

🧮 Use Our Free Gravel Calculator

Enter driveway dimensions and desired depth — we'll calculate cubic yards, tons, and cost automatically. Supports all common gravel types.

The Formula

  1. Measure length and width in feet. For curved driveways, measure the longest length and average width.
  2. Pick your depth based on use:
    • Light cars only: 4 inches
    • Trucks, SUVs: 6 inches
    • Heavy equipment, RVs: 8 inches
  3. Calculate cubic feet: Length × Width × (Depth ÷ 12)
  4. Convert to cubic yards: Cubic Feet ÷ 27
  5. Convert to tons: Cubic Yards × 1.4 (most gravel weighs ~2,800 lbs/yd)
  6. Add compaction: Gravel compacts 10–15% when driven on. Multiply by 1.10 for light use, 1.15 for heavy.

Real Examples

Example 1: 12×50 Driveway, 4 Inches Deep, Cars Only

Area: 12 × 50 = 600 sq ft
Volume: 600 × (4 ÷ 12) = 200 cubic feet
Cubic yards: 200 ÷ 27 = 7.4 yards
Tons: 7.4 × 1.4 = 10.4 tons
With 10% compaction: order 11.5 tons

Example 2: 20×100 Driveway, 6 Inches Deep, Trucks & Equipment

Area: 20 × 100 = 2,000 sq ft
Volume: 2,000 × (6 ÷ 12) = 1,000 cubic feet
Cubic yards: 1,000 ÷ 27 = 37 yards
Tons: 37 × 1.4 = 51.8 tons
With 15% compaction: order 59.5 tons (round to 60)

Example 3: 10×30 Parking Pad, 6 Inches Deep

Area: 10 × 30 = 300 sq ft
Volume: 300 × (6 ÷ 12) = 150 cubic feet
Cubic yards: 150 ÷ 27 = 5.6 yards
Tons: 5.6 × 1.4 = 7.8 tons
With 10% compaction: order 8.6 tons (round to 9)

Gravel Types & Costs

Gravel TypeBest ForPrice/Ton
Crushed stone (#57, ¾")Top layer, drainage$30–$50
Crushed stone (#2, 1½")Base layer, heavy loads$25–$45
Crusher run / Dense gradeBase, compacts hard$20–$35
Pea gravel (⅜")Walkways, not driveways$40–$60
River rock (1–3")Decorative, not for driving$60–$100

Base Layer vs. Top Layer

A proper gravel driveway has two layers:

💡 Pro Tip

If your driveway is on clay soil or in a wet area, add a geotextile fabric layer between soil and gravel. It prevents the stone from sinking into mud over time and can double the lifespan of your driveway. Fabric costs ~$0.15/sq ft — cheap insurance.
