If you're building a paver patio, one of the first questions is also one of the easiest to get wrong: how much sand do you actually need? Order too little and you're making a second supplier run mid-project. Order too much and you've got a pile of leftover sand and money you didn't need to spend.
The short answer is that it depends on your patio's size, the sand layer's depth, and the type of sand you're using. The longer answer — the one that keeps you from coming up short — involves understanding patio base sand, waste factors, and where compaction does and doesn't matter. Let's walk through all of it with real numbers.
First, Understand the Layers of a Patio
A common mistake is thinking of “patio sand” as a single thing. A proper paver patio is built in layers, and sand shows up in two very different roles.
- Gravel base (sub-base): A compacted layer of crushed aggregate — usually 4–6 inches for a walkway or patio, more for anything bearing heavy loads. This is the structural foundation. It is not sand.
- Bedding sand (the layer this guide is about): A thin, uniform layer — typically 1 inch — of coarse sand that the pavers sit on. This is your true patio base sand.
- Joint sand: Fine or polymeric sand swept into the gaps after the pavers are set. This is a separate, smaller quantity.
When people ask “how much sand for a patio,” they almost always mean the bedding layer. That's where we'll focus, but we'll cover joint sand and the base too, because a real order includes all three.
What Kind of Sand Should You Use?
Not all sand is interchangeable, and using the wrong type is a classic reason patios fail early.
For the Bedding Layer
- Coarse concrete sand (paver base sand) is the standard choice. It's sharp and angular, so it locks together and drains well. This is what most manufacturers specify under pavers.
- Avoid play sand and fine mason sand for the bedding layer. They're too fine and rounded — they hold water, shift under load, and lead to sunken, uneven pavers over time.

For the Joints
- Polymeric sand is the popular modern choice. Swept into the joints and activated with water, it hardens to resist weeds and washout.
- Regular fine joint sand works too and costs less, but doesn't lock up the way polymeric does.
For the Base (Not Sand)
The layer under the bedding sand should be crushed gravel / aggregate, not sand. If you're figuring that layer, use the Gravel Calculator instead — it's a different material with different math (and, as we'll see, different compaction behavior).
How to Calculate Bedding Sand: The Formula
The math for the bedding layer is straightforward:
- Find the area — length × width (in feet).
- Set the depth — convert inches to feet (1 inch = 1/12 ft). Bedding sand is almost always 1 inch.
- Multiply to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards.
- Add a waste factor (more on this below).
- Convert to tons if buying in bulk — multiply cubic yards by the sand's density.
In formula form:
Cubic feet = Length × Width × (Depth in inches ÷ 12) Cubic yards = Cubic feet ÷ 27 Order (yd³) = Cubic yards × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100) Tons = Order (yd³) × Density (tons/yd³)

Worked Example 1: A 12 × 16 ft Patio
Let's build a standard 12-by-16-foot paver patio with a 1-inch bedding layer of paver base sand.
- Area: 12 × 16 = 192 square feet
- Depth: 1 inch = 0.0833 ft
- Cubic feet: 192 × 0.0833 = 16 cubic feet
- Cubic yards: 16 ÷ 27 = 0.59 cubic yards
Now add a waste factor. For bedding sand, 10% is sensible (we'll explain why shortly):
- With 10% waste: 0.59 × 1.10 = 0.65 cubic yards
Convert to tons using paver base sand's density of 1.5 tons/yd ³:
- Tons: 0.65 × 1.5 = ≈ 1 ton
So a 12 × 16 patio needs roughly 0.65 cubic yards (about 1 ton) of bedding sand. If your supplier sells bagged sand, note that a 0.5 cubic-foot bag covers very little — you'd need around 35 bags for this job, which is why bulk delivery usually wins for anything patio-sized.
Worked Example 2: A Small 10 × 10 ft Patio
- Area: 10 × 10 = 100 square feet
- Cubic feet: 100 × 0.0833 = 8.33 cubic feet
- Cubic yards: 8.33 ÷ 27 = 0.31 cubic yards
- With 10% waste: 0.31 × 1.10 = 0.34 cubic yards
- Tons: 0.34 × 1.5 = ≈ 0.5 tons
A small 10 × 10 patio needs about a third of a cubic yard of bedding sand. Notice how small these numbers are — bedding sand is a thin layer, so the volume is modest. That's also exactly why ordering short is so easy: the “buffer” is small in absolute terms, and a minor underestimate leaves you scraping the pile.
The Waste Factor: Why You Add It
A waste factor is the extra you order beyond the theoretical volume to cover real-world losses. For bedding sand, waste comes from:
- Screeding overspill. You spread sand a little wider than the paver field and level it off; some ends up beyond the edges.
- Uneven base. Low spots in the gravel base soak up extra sand as you screed to a flat plane.
- Handling loss. Sand spills off shovels, wheelbarrows, and the edges of the work area.
- Depth variation. Nobody screeds a perfect 1 inch everywhere; the average creeps up slightly.
A 5–10% waste factor covers this for most patios. Go toward 10% if your base is rough, your patio is oddly shaped, or you're new to screeding. Rounding up to the next orderable unit (a bulk yard, a full ton) accomplishes the same thing.
The one rule: never order the raw calculated volume. On a thin layer like bedding sand, exact-quantity ordering means coming up short essentially every time.
Compaction: Where It Matters — and Where It Doesn't
This is the part most guides get muddled, so let's be clear and honest.
The Gravel Base — Yes, Compact It
The crushed aggregate base beneath your sand must be compacted, and compaction significantly reduces its volume. Loose gravel can lose 15–25% of its volume once you run a plate compactor over it. That means if you order the exact finished base thickness, you'll be short after tamping.
So for the gravel base, add extra to cover compaction — order for the loose volume that compacts down to your target depth. The Gravel Calculator is where you handle that layer.
The Bedding Sand — Do Not Pre-Compact It
Here's the counterintuitive part: you do not compact the bedding sand before laying pavers. You screed it to a uniform, loose 1-inch layer and set the pavers directly onto it. The final compaction happens after the pavers are down, when you run the plate compactor over the finished surface to lock everything together.
What this means for your order:
- Don't add a “compaction allowance” to the bedding sand quantity the way you would for the gravel base. The 1-inch screeded layer is the volume you need.
- The waste factor above already covers the small real-world losses.
In short: compaction inflates your gravel order, not your bedding-sand order. Treating bedding sand like base gravel — and padding it for compaction — is how people end up with a leftover pile.
Don't Forget the Joint Sand
After the pavers are set, you sweep sand into the joints. This is a small but easy-to-overlook quantity. Coverage varies with paver thickness and joint width, but for a typical patio a bag or two of polymeric sand per 50–100 square feet is a reasonable starting point — check the specific product's coverage chart, since it varies by brand. Order the joint sand separately from your bedding sand; they're different products doing different jobs.
