The Formula (It's Simple)

  1. Measure length and width of your bed in feet. For irregular shapes, break into rectangles and add them up.
  2. Pick your depth in inches:
    • 2 inches — maintenance refresh (already have mulch)
    • 3 inches — new beds or heavy weed suppression
    • 4 inches — extreme weed problems (avoid around plant stems)
  3. Calculate cubic feet: Length × Width × (Depth ÷ 12)
  4. Convert to cubic yards: Cubic Feet ÷ 27
  5. Add 10% waste factor — mulch settles, spills, and some areas need more.

Real Examples

Example 1: 10×10 Garden Bed, 3 Inches Deep

10 × 10 × (3 ÷ 12) = 25 cubic feet
25 ÷ 27 = 0.93 cubic yards
With 10% waste: order 1 cubic yard (or ~14 bags)

Example 2: 5×20 Raised Bed, 2 Inches Deep

5 × 20 × (2 ÷ 12) = 16.7 cubic feet
16.7 ÷ 27 = 0.62 cubic yards
With 10% waste: order 0.7 cubic yards (or ~9 bags)

Example 3: Tree Ring, 4-Foot Diameter, 3 Inches Deep

Area = π × 2² = 12.57 sq ft
12.57 × (3 ÷ 12) = 3.14 cubic feet
With 10% waste: ~4 bags of mulch

Mulch Depth by Use Case

ApplicationRecommended Depth
New garden beds3 inches
Refreshing existing mulch2 inches
Around trees (avoid trunk)2–3 inches
Pathways (no plants)3–4 inches
Sloped areas3–4 inches (adds erosion control)

💡 Pro Tip

If you're ordering bulk mulch delivered, round up to the nearest half-yard. Most suppliers won't deliver partial yards, and having extra is better than running short and paying for a second delivery fee.
