Paver Calculator: How Many Pavers for a Patio Without Overbuying
Ordering pavers is one of the most common overbuying mistakes in hardscaping. Order too few and you can't finish. Order too many and you're storing pallets of stone in your garage. Here's how to get it exactly right.
🧮 Use Our Free Paver Calculator
Enter patio dimensions, paver size, and pattern — we'll calculate exact count, waste factor, and base material needs.

Step 1: Calculate Paver Area
- Measure your patio area in square feet:
Length × Width - Calculate one paver's area in square feet:
- 4×8 inch paver = 0.222 sq ft
- 6×6 inch paver = 0.25 sq ft
- 6×9 inch paver = 0.375 sq ft
- 12×12 inch paver = 1 sq ft
- Divide:
Patio Area ÷ Paver Area = Base Count
Step 2: Add Waste Factor
The waste factor depends on your pattern and edge complexity:
| Pattern / Edge Type | Waste Factor |
|---|---|
| Straight stack bond, square edges | 5–10% |
| Running bond, simple rectangle | 10% |
| Diagonal or herringbone | 15% |
| Curved edges or circles | 15–20% |
| Inlays or multi-pattern | 20%+ |
Real Examples
Example 1: 12×12 Patio, 4×8 Inch Pavers, Running Bond
Patio area: 12 × 12 = 144 sq ft
Paver area: 4 × 8 = 32 sq in = 0.222 sq ft
Base count: 144 ÷ 0.222 = 649 pavers
With 10% waste: order 714 pavers (round to 720)
Example 2: 20×20 Patio, 6×6 Inch Pavers, Herringbone
Patio area: 20 × 20 = 400 sq ft
Paver area: 6 × 6 = 36 sq in = 0.25 sq ft
Base count: 400 ÷ 0.25 = 1,600 pavers
With 15% waste (herringbone): order 1,840 pavers
Example 3: 8×40 Walkway, 6×9 Inch Pavers, Running Bond
Area: 8 × 40 = 320 sq ft
Paver area: 6 × 9 = 54 sq in = 0.375 sq ft
Base count: 320 ÷ 0.375 = 853 pavers
With 10% waste: order 939 pavers (round to 940)
Don't Forget Base Materials
Pavers sit on a base of compacted gravel and sand. For most residential patios:
- Base gravel (class 5 or ¾" minus): 4–6 inches deep, compacted. Use our gravel calculator.
- Sand bedding layer: 1 inch of coarse concrete sand. About 1 cubic yard per 200 sq ft of patio.
- Edge restraints: Plastic or metal edging around the perimeter to prevent spreading.
⚠️ Common Paver Mistakes
- Skipping the gravel base: Pavers on dirt shift, sink, and grow weeds. The base is non-negotiable.
- Ordering exact count:You'll need extras for cuts, breakage, and future repairs. 10% minimum, 15% for diagonal patterns.
- Ignoring paver thickness:Driveways need 2¾" thick pavers. Patios and walkways can use standard 2⅜" pavers.
When to Use Our Calculator
Our free paver calculator handles all of this — including paver size selection, pattern waste adjustments, and base material estimates. It even calculates the edging linear footage you need.
