How Do I Calculate Materials for a Concrete Block Wall?

Divide wall height by 8 inches for courses, divide wall length by 16 inches for blocks per course, then multiply and add 5-10% waste. A 20-foot x 8-foot wall needs about 199 standard 8x8x16 blocks, 16 bags of mortar, and — with cores grouted every 32 inches — roughly 0.68 cubic yards of grout and 80 linear feet of vertical rebar.

A concrete masonry unit (CMU) foundation wall is built from standard 8x8x16 block, mortared course to course in a running bond, with vertical rebar set into grout-filled cores and horizontal joint reinforcement embedded in the mortar bed every course or every other course. Unlike a dry-stacked retaining wall, a CMU wall is a structural assembly carrying loads from the framing above, so its rebar and grout schedule should ultimately follow your foundation engineer's plan — this calculator gives you a fast material takeoff for typical residential spacing.

Formula: Total blocks = ceil(wall height ÷ 8 in) × ceil(wall length ÷ 16 in) × (1 + waste). Grouted cores are spaced along the wall length at your chosen center-to-center interval; grout volume is grouted cores × core area × wall height, converted to cubic yards.

How Much Mortar Does a Block Wall Need?

Budget one 80 lb bag of Type S or Type N mortar mix per 12-13 standard blocks. That coverage assumes face-shell bedding (mortar on the block's outer webs only, the standard for CMU) and 3/8-inch joints. Full mortar bedding, thicker joints, or a less experienced crew will use more — order a few extra bags rather than running short mid-course.

How Do I Choose Core-Fill Spacing?

Follow your stamped foundation plan. Typical residential spacing runs 24-48 inches on-center for light loads, tightening toward solid grouting (every core) as wall height, retained-earth pressure, or seismic/wind demand increases. This calculator's presets cover the common range, but the governing document is always the engineer's plan or your local building code table — not a rule of thumb.

What Is Horizontal Joint Reinforcement?

A welded-wire “ladder” embedded flat in the mortar bed joint to control shrinkage cracking. Standard residential practice places it every other course (16 inches vertically); high seismic or high-wind zones often require every course (8 inches). It's sold in job-length sections or coils — total linear feet needed is the number of reinforced courses times the wall length.

How Much Grout Do Grouted Cores Need?

Grouted cores × core cross-section area × wall height, converted to cubic yards. Figures here assume a standard 8-inch-wide block's core opening (about 0.26 sq ft); a deeper block (10 or 12-inch) holds proportionally more grout per core — confirm with your block supplier for wider units. Grout mix has roughly the same yield per bag as concrete mix (about 0.6 cu ft per 80 lb bag).

Do I Need an Engineer for a Concrete Block Foundation Wall?

Yes, in almost every case. Unlike a low garden retaining wall, a CMU foundation or basement wall supports the structure above it and resists lateral soil pressure below grade. Rebar size, spacing, grout schedule, and wall thickness should come from a stamped foundation plan or your local building code's prescriptive CMU foundation wall tables — this calculator is a material quantity tool, not a structural design tool.
