Five steps from a tape measure to a delivered load: measure the area, pick the thickness, convert to tons at hot-mix density, add waste, and place an order the plant can actually fill.

Asphalt is ordered by weight, not by area, so every driveway estimate has to end in a number of tons the plant can load onto a truck. The conversion is not complicated — it is area, thickness, a fixed density, and a waste cushion — but getting it wrong in either direction hurts: order short and the paver stalls waiting on hot mix, order long and you pay for material you rake into a pile. Step 1: Measure the Area in Square Feet

Start with a tape measure and the actual ground you are going to pave. Measure length times width in feetfor a simple rectangular driveway. Most driveways are not perfect rectangles, so break the shape into pieces — the main run, the apron at the street, a parking pad or turnaround — measure each as a rectangle and add the square footages together. For a curved edge or a flared apron, take a few width measurements along its length and average them. This footprint is the foundation of every number that follows, so measure carefully; a 10 percent error here is a 10 percent error in your final tonnage.

Step 2: Choose the Finished Thickness

Thickness is the compacted depth of asphalt, and it is the biggest single driver of how many tons you order. A residential passenger-car driveway is typically 2–3 inches of asphalt laid over a 4–8 inch compacted aggregate base. Two inches is common for a straightforward car driveway on good base; three inches is the call when the driveway sees heavier vehicles, serves as an approach off a busy road, or you simply want more margin. Because moving from 2 to 3 inches raises material tons by half, settle this number before you convert — it changes the order more than anything else. Step 3: Convert Area and Thickness to Tons

Here is where the density does the work. Compacted hot-mix asphalt weighs about 145 pounds per cubic foot, which works out to roughly 110–120 pounds per square foot for every inch of finished thickness. The field rule worth memorizing: one ton of hot mix covers about 80 square feet at 2 inches compacted.

For hand math, a clean shortcut is: tons ≈ (square feet × thickness in inches) ÷ 160. So a 600-square-foot driveway at 2 inches is about 600 × 2 ÷ 160 ≈ 7.5 tons before waste. The same driveway at 3 inches is about 11.3 tons — the 50 percent jump that thickness always brings. Step 4: Add Waste and Round to a Deliverable Load

Your calculated tonnage is the theoretical minimum for a perfectly flat, perfectly compacted mat with no losses — which no real driveway is. Add 5–10 percent for waste to cover material lost to hand-raking around edges and obstacles, low spots in the subgrade that soak up extra depth, the cooled ends of a truckload that do not compact well, and normal compaction variation. Ten percent is a safe default for a residential job with any hand-work; five percent is reasonable for a large, machine-laid, well-prepped rectangle.

Then round up. Asphalt is hauled in truck-sized loads and you generally cannot order an exact fractional ton to the pound, so land on a number the plant can deliver. Coming up short is the worse failure: a plant cannot always dispatch a small second load on short notice, and the hot mix already on the ground is cooling while you wait. A little leftover asphalt is cheap insurance against a stalled pour.

Step 5: Confirm Price and Place the Order

A Worked Example, Start to Finish

Say you have a driveway that is 20 feet long and 30 feet wide, which is 600 square feet. You choose 2 inchesof asphalt over your existing base. Convert: 600 × 2 ÷ 160 ≈ 7.5 tons. Add 10 percent waste: 7.5 × 1.10 ≈ 8.3 tons. Round up to what the plant delivers and you are ordering roughly 8.5 tons. Common Ordering Mistakes

  • Ordering by area instead of weight. Plants sell by the ton and trucks weigh at the scale. Always convert to tons before you call.
  • Forgetting waste. The bare calculated tonnage leaves nothing for hand-work and low spots. Add 5–10 percent every time.
  • Guessing the thickness. Since thickness swings tonnage by half between 2 and 3 inches, guessing here throws the whole order off. Decide it deliberately.
  • Ignoring the subgrade. An uneven or unstripped subgrade quietly absorbs extra asphalt in the low spots. Grade and compact the base first so your thickness number stays true.
