Tools: a plate compactor for granular fill or a jumping jack rammer for cohesive, clay-heavy fill (both are common rentals), a skid steer or compact tractor to move and spread fill, a landscape rake, string line and stakes, a line level or laser level to check the slope, a round-point shovel, and a garden hose for moisture conditioning dry fill.

Step 1: Call 811 and Assess the Site
Call 811 for utility locates before any digging. Walk the site and note the low spots, the paths water already takes, and where the finished grade needs to land relative to foundations, slabs, and existing hardscape. Decide how much fill you need with the Fill Dirt Calculator before you order, so the delivery matches the job instead of leaving you short or with a leftover pile.
Step 2: Strip Topsoil and Organic Material
Remove topsoil, sod, roots, and any other organic material from the footprint that will carry structural fill. Organic matter decomposes and compresses over months and years, and fill placed on top of it settles into a low spot long after the job looked finished. Strip down to firm mineral subsoil before you place any fill, and set the stripped topsoil aside — you will want it again for the finish cap.
Step 3: Bring in Clean Structural Fill
Order clean fill dirt with low organic content and a workable mix of particle sizes, not screened topsoil and not fill loaded with clay clumps, mulch, or debris. Topsoil is built to feed plants and compresses unpredictably; structural fill is built to hold its volume under a compactor and under load. Inconsistent material compacts unevenly and leaves soft pockets hiding under an otherwise firm-looking surface.
Step 4: Place Fill in 6–8 Inch Lifts
Spread fill in layers no thicker than 6–8 inches of loose material, called lifts. Compaction equipment only transmits enough energy to densify a limited depth of soil in one pass — dump a 2-foot pile and compact only the top and the lower material stays loose. Placing and compacting in thin lifts is the single biggest difference between fill that holds its grade and fill that settles.
Step 5: Compact Each Lift to About 95 Percent
Run a plate compactor on granular or sandy fill, or a jumping jack rammer on cohesive, clay-heavy fill, over each lift until it stops deflecting underfoot. Structural fill is typically specified to roughly 95 percent of standard Proctor density. Moisture matters as much as the equipment: compact at slightly damp, near-optimum moisture — fill that is too dry will not bind together, and fill that is too wet shoves and ripples ahead of the plate instead of compacting.
Step 6: Grade to Slope Away from Structures
Shape the finished surface to fall away from foundations, sheds, and other structures at roughly ¼ inch per foot, or about 6 inches of drop over the first 10 feet. Check it with a line level or laser level as you go. This slope is what keeps roof runoff and surface water moving away from the structure instead of pooling against the foundation or working its way into a crawlspace or basement.
Step 7: Cap with Topsoil and Stabilize
Finish with 2–4 inches of topsoil over the compacted fill — size it with the Topsoil Calculator — to support seed, sod, or planting. Stabilize the surface with grass seed, sod, or mulch as soon as practical after grading. Bare graded fill erodes fast in the first heavy rain, before vegetation has had any chance to root and hold the slope together.
Common Mistakes
- Fill dumped in one deep lift. Compacting the surface of a 2-foot pile leaves the material underneath loose and guarantees settling later. Work in 6–8 inch lifts instead.
- Topsoil used as structural fill. Organic-rich topsoil decomposes and compresses unevenly under a slab, patio, or driveway. Use clean fill dirt below and save topsoil for the cap.
- Organics left under the fill. Roots and sod buried beneath structural fill rot out and leave voids that settle months later. Strip down to firm subsoil first.
- No slope, or the wrong slope. Flat or back-sloped grade sends water toward the structure instead of away from it. Hold the ¼ inch per foot rule for at least the first 10 feet out.
- Compacting too wet or too dry. Bone-dry fill never binds; saturated fill shoves under the compactor instead of densifying. Condition dry fill with a hose and let soaked fill drain before compacting.
Cost: DIY vs. Contractor

Contractor-installed grading and compaction typically runs $10–25 per cubic yard placed and compacted, or a flat day rate of roughly $500–1,200 for a small crew with equipment on a backyard-scale job. Poor site access, extensive drainage correction, or fill depths over a couple of feet push the number up, and any job that affects a foundation or supports a structure is worth hiring out for the compaction testing alone.
