How Do I Calculate How Much Insulation I Need?
Multiply length by height for gross area, subtract about 15% for wall framing, then divide the net cavity area by the coverage printed on the package and round up. A 40-foot wall 8 feet tall is 320 square feet gross; after a 15% framing deduction that's 272 square feet of cavity to fill. At 88 square feet per bag of batts with 10% waste, that's 4 bags.

What R-Value Do I Need for My Climate Zone?
ENERGY STAR recommends R-30 to R-49 in attics in the warm South and R-49 to R-60 in colder zones; walls run R-13 to R-15 in a 2×4 cavity and up to R-21 in a 2×6. R-value measures resistance to heat flow — higher is better insulated. The right target depends on your IECC climate zone (1 is hottest, 7 is coldest). Batts vs. Blown-In vs. Spray Foam
- Batts / rolls: Cheapest and the easiest DIY for open stud and joist bays. Cut to fit around wiring and boxes; friction- fit or staple the flanges. R-13 to R-15 in a 2×4 wall, R-19 to R-21 in a 2×6.
- Blown-in loose fill: The best choice for attics and finished walls — it fills irregular spaces and self-levels. Rented blowers make it a weekend job. Watch for settling; blow a little over the target depth.
- Spray foam: Highest R-value per inch and air-seals as it cures, but the most expensive. Best for rim joists, cathedral ceilings, and tight cavities. Closed-cell adds structural rigidity and a vapor barrier.
Should I Deduct for Framing?
Yes for walls — studs and plates take up roughly 15% of the area at 16 in on center and have no cavity to insulate. No for attic blow-overs, which run continuously over the joists. The framing selector handles both. Ignoring the deduction on a wall over-orders; forgetting to insulate over the joists (thermal bridging) under-performs. Blown-in over the attic floor at full depth solves the bridging problem.
