They look almost identical in the bag, but using the wrong one will cost you a sunken patio, cracked mortar, or a sandbox full of dust. Here's exactly how the three most-confused sands differ — and which to use for your project.

Walk into any home center and you'll find a wall of sand bags that all look the same: fine, tan, heavy. But sand types for projects are not interchangeable, and the differences — grain size, shape, and how the sand is processed — decide whether your project holds up or fails within a season.

Play Sand: Clean and Safe, Not Structural

Play sand is fine-grained sand that's been washed and screened specifically to make it safe to handle. The washing removes dust and clay; the screening pulls out sharp particles, small stones, and debris. Many bagged play sands are also lighter in color and sometimes treated to control dust.

What it's good at:

  • Sandboxes and play areas — the whole reason it exists. Soft on hands, low dust, no sharp bits.
  • Molding sand for kids and light craft or activity uses.
  • Filling small voids where cleanliness matters more than strength — base for a small paver stepping stone, leveling under a kiddie pool.

Where it fails: play sand's rounded, fine grains don't lock together. Under any real load it shifts and compacts unpredictably, and it holds water. Never use it as a structural base, under pavers, or in a concrete mix. It's a safety-first product, not a construction one. Play sand runs around 1.4 tons per cubic yard.

Mason Sand: Made for Mortar

Mason sand (also called masonry sand or mortar sand) is a fine sand with a uniform, consistent grain. It's typically softer and smoother than concrete sand, and that consistency is exactly what masonry work needs: a fine, evenly graded sand mixes into a smooth, workable mortar that spreads cleanly and fills thin joints.

What it's good at:

  • Mortar for brick and block — its primary job. The fine, uniform grain makes buttery, workable mortar.
  • Grout and parging and other thin masonry applications where a coarse sand would be gritty and hard to tool.
  • Smooth-finish work where appearance and workability matter.
  • Sometimes as a substitute for play sand in non-safety-critical fill, since it's also fine — though it isn't washed for handling the way play sand is.

Where it fails: because it's fine and rounded, mason sand is a poor choice for paver bedding — it shifts under load just like play sand. It's also not ideal for structural concrete, where a coarser, sharper sand gives better strength. Mason sand runs around 1.35 tons per cubic yard.

Paver Base Sand: The Structural One

Paver base sand — also sold as bedding sand or coarse concrete sand — is the odd one out, and the most important to get right. Its grains are coarse, sharp, and angular. Those angular faces interlock under pressure, so the sand stays put instead of shifting, and the larger particles let water drain through instead of pooling.

What it's good at:

  • Bedding layer under pavers — the standard 1-inch screeded layer that pavers sit on. This is what manufacturers specify.
  • Bedding under flagstone and slabs and other hardscape that needs a stable, draining base.
  • Structural concrete mixes, where sharp concrete sand builds strength.
  • Drainage applications, thanks to its coarse, free- draining grade.

Where it fails: it's too coarse and gritty for a sandbox or for fine mortar joints. And a critical distinction: paver base sand is the bedding layer — it is not the same as paver joint sand (the fine or polymeric sand swept into the gaps after laying), and it's not the crushed-gravel base that goes under the sand. Paver base sand is the densest of the three at about 1.5 tons per cubic yard.

Head to Head: Play Sand vs Mason Sand

These two get confused the most because they're both fine and look nearly identical. The real differences:

  • Processing. Play sand is washed and screened for safe handling; mason sand is graded for consistent mortar. Play sand is the “clean” one.
  • Purpose. Play sand is a finished consumer product for play; mason sand is a construction ingredient for mortar.
  • Color and dust. Play sand is often lighter and lower-dust by design; mason sand isn't processed for either.

For a sandbox, always choose play sand — the safety processing is the entire point. For mortar, choose mason sand — the consistent grain makes the work easier and the joints cleaner. In a pinch they can cross over for non-critical fill, but neither one is ever the answer for paver bedding.

  • Sandbox / play area: Play sand.
  • Brick or block mortar: Mason sand.
  • Grout, parging, thin masonry: Mason sand.
  • Paver patio or walkway bedding: Paver base sand (coarse concrete sand).
  • Flagstone or slab bedding: Paver base sand.
  • Structural concrete mix: Concrete / paver base sand.
  • Drainage fill: Paver base sand.
  • Filling paver joints: Neither — use fine paver joint sand or polymeric sand.

  • Play or mason sand under pavers. The number-one mistake. Fine, rounded sand shifts and holds water, so the pavers sink and heave. Always use coarse paver base sand for bedding.
  • Concrete sand in a sandbox. Too coarse and not processed for safe handling — gritty, dusty, and potentially sharp. Use play sand.
  • Coarse sand in fine mortar. Concrete sand makes mortar gritty and hard to tool. Use mason sand.
  • Confusing bedding sand with joint sand. Paver base sand goes under the pavers; fine or polymeric joint sand goes between them. You need both, and they're different products.
