How Much Gravel to Order (Tons)

A five-step method to go from a tape measure to a tonnage — measure the area, set the depth, convert to cubic yards, convert to tons, and add a compaction allowance — so you order the right amount the first time.

Gravel is sold by the ton, but you measure a job in feet and inches, so every order comes down to a short chain of conversions. Get the chain right and you fill the truck once; get it wrong and you either pay for stone you do not need or pay a second trip charge for the little you came up short. Step 1: Measure the Area in Square Feet

Start with a tape measure and get the length and width of the area the stone will cover, then multiply them for square feet. For a rectangular driveway or pad that is all you need. For an odd shape, break it into rectangles, measure each one, and add the areas together — that is more accurate than trying to average a curve. Measure to where the stone actually stops, not to a property line or a fence, because you are ordering to cover the real footprint, not the lot.

Step 2: Choose the Finished Depth

Decide how deep the stone will sit and convert inches to feet by dividing by 12 (so 4 inches is 0.33 ft, 6 inches is 0.5 ft). Depth is where people under-order most. A single course runs 3–4 inches for a top layer or 4–6 inches for a base. A full gravel driveway is not one shallow dump — it is layers that add up to roughly 8–12 inches of total stone, and each layer has its own depth. Step 3: Convert to Cubic Yards

Multiply your square feet by the depth in feet to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards — because one cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet (a 3 × 3 × 3 ft box). Cubic yards is the unit quarries and volume calculators think in, so this is the number that bridges your tape-measure work to something you can actually order against. Step 4: Convert Cubic Yards to Tons

Gravel is sold and trucked by weight, so turn cubic yards into tons by multiplying by the density of crushed stone — roughly 1.4 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard. Using about 1.45 as a middle figure, 5 cubic yards is around 7 tons. As a quick field check, remember the coverage rule: one ton of crushed stone covers about 100 square feet at 2 inches deep. Clean, washed, or decorative stone weighs a little differently, and drainage rock has its own density, so use the matching calculator for those rather than assuming crusher-run numbers.

Step 5: Add a Compaction and Waste Allowance

Finally, add about ten percent to your tonnage before you order. Crushed stone compacts as it is rolled — loose stone settles into a thinner, denser layer, so the in-place volume is less than what you spread. On top of that, spreading is never perfectly even, low spots eat extra stone, and a little is always lost to spillage. Ten percent covers all of it. Rounding up is cheap; coming up short means a second delivery and often a second trip charge, which costs far more than the stone you were missing. Leftover gravel is never wasted either — it tops soft spots and potholes for years.

A Worked Example

Say you are surfacing a driveway 12 ft wide by 100 ft long with a 4-inch top course. Area is 12 × 100 = 1,200 sq ft. Depth is 4 ÷ 12 = 0.33 ft. Volume is 1,200 × 0.33 = 400 cubic feet, and 400 ÷ 27 ≈ 14.8 cubic yards. At about 1.45 tons per yard that is roughly 21.5 tons, and adding ten percent brings you to about 24 tons to order. What if I ordered too little gravel?

Coming up short usually means a second delivery, and a second delivery can carry its own trip charge, so a small shortfall costs more than the missing stone is worth.
